“You are still so young!” “Yea! But I’m not healthy!”

This is Birdie's 25th personal article

Even though we are very young, we are not as healthy as we are supposed to be. If we compare ourselves to our grandparents, we can significantly see this different.

Take my grandfather as an example. The place I grew up in China, it’s 6 floors high with no lift. But he is still able to carry me up single handed without even panting. And that’s in his late 50s. Imagine his body condition when he is younger. He must be so much stronger.

Now, relate back to ourselves, can we even walk up 6 floors without being slightly breathless at all?

As I have shared in the previous article, health is single most important factor for being successful, but what kind of health condition are we in right now?

But since health condition is a direct reflection on what kind of lifestyle we have, we shall discuss about the lifestyle we have right now.

Currently, it seems that the “Can’t sleep at night and can’t wake up in the morning” has become a social norm in the younger generation.

Even though we are fully aware that sleep plays a very important part in keeping a healthy body, but we still disregard harms and continue sleeping late because the only effect that cause to us right now is only to be a little less energetic. Other than that, everything else seems to be normal and nothing’s wrong.

However, what we don’t realise is that not only we are having lesser energy for the day, which means we can’t be focus for whatever work we want to do, we also don’t dare to give ourselves the rest we need during the day.

Why? Very simple, I’m sure you have thought of the same thing before. “If I sleep now, I scared that I won’t be sleepy early and will be sleeping late again.” Once this happens, the vicious cycle of bad sleep goes on and on.

And that’s only one part in the lifestyle section, there are a lot more that we need to take care if we want a good lifestyle, for example things like eating pattern, water intake, physical activeness and work-life balance. I will very briefly go through each one of them so we can understand better together.

Eating pattern: Although there’s a standard eating pattern out there which says three meals a day, but it’s not entirely correct because everybody has different needs to their body and their want.

But there are still rules that we should follow to ensure that eating pattern is helping us not harming us. For example, eating right before sleep is bad, because you will keep your digestive system working during your sleep and your system won’t be able to get enough rest.

Water intake: I just get to know this like last week when I went for the fitness check-up. It came out to be my water percentage in my body is quite low because I drink too little water daily. Once water percentage is low, we will have water retention. Which means we will be slightly bloated because our body will store water under our skin in case our body need to use body suddenly.

Not only that, you will accumulate more toxins in your body because it’s harder for your body to wash those toxins away. That’s when you will feel that your breathe and body odour start to smell a little worse.

Physical activeness: Basically exercising. This is one thing that everybody knows that is important but it’s also the one thing that is the hardest to get it going. I think everybody knows the importance of exercising and the benefits of exercising, so I shall not share more here.

I just want to say that exercising is being too overrated by the public. It’s necessary to exercise frequently but it’s not the one for all solution for everything. Especially having a good lifestyle, exercise is just a bonus is you get the others right.

Work-life balance: This is the part where it handles your mental health. Too much of anything is always bad, therefore we need to get a balance in everything we do.

For example, of work-life balance, if we don’t get enough “life” part in your life. You will feel stressed out easily and feel unmotivated and depressed easily because you submerge yourself I tone of stress where you forget the most important thing of life which is to enjoy.

However, if we have too much of the “life” part, we can be easily overwhelmed and unwilling to face the stress that’s caused by the work part. I’m sure you have heard stories that son/daughter of rich parents play too much that make the family bankrupt and etc. This is the extreme case of too much “life” part.

Somehow, I wrote more than one page just for the lifestyle part, so I shall keep the other parts short. Other than lifestyle, we often also give ourselves the permission to harm our own body because we know we are still young.

“We’re only 19. Where got so easy to get those diseases.”

“Before we get old, we need to make sure we live our life first”

We always give ourselves this kind of excuse whenever we know we will be doing something bad for our body.

Never we know that there are people dying around this world around our age because they gave themselves this kind of permission too much.

Just like the sleeping pattern, the only reason we are still able to fuck around with our body is the after effects of doing those activities are not significant.

But what we don’t know is that we are giving birth to the snakes of illness in our body. They haven’t show up because our strong immune system right now is helping us to fight them off. But our immune system is not strong enough to totally eliminate them. So, when our immunity weakens as we age, the snakes will slowly come out and take over our body.

There’s a quote that I read somewhere in chinese, it says, “年轻用命换钱,老了用钱换命” which means when we are young, we use our life to earn as much money as possible, but when we are old, we use as much money to earn a little extra time for our life.

So, if you do not want to earn all the money just to feed your doctor. It’s best that you start taking care of your body and especially start by correcting your lifestyle now.
